I was in my cousin’s wedding in Mobile about 20+ years ago. I stayed with the bride’s grandfather, who constantly turned stuff on his homemade lathe (made from car engine parts and a washing machine motor.)

All of his pieces were from glued-up resawn firewood. Everybody who knew him had candle-stands, fern stands, wooden goblets (I got one of those) etc. til they were just not interested in getting any more. He was a real fine fellow though. Cooked a mean breakfast too! Long gone now, or over a hundred if he’s alive!

Limestone Correctional Facility, which is located near Athens, AL, has a craft shop where several inmates manufacture those footballs to order with any team logo you want laminated on them. They are beautiful and bring quite a high price.
