This bed was inspired by Column and Beam design that were common place where I worked. All the wood except the pine paneling was salvaged from pallet lumber.
The beams are rabbited and glued the columns are just glued.
The endplates on the beams are glued and screwed.
The trusses are just glued. A single truss held ~200 pounds at full span during testing.
The headboard was going to be a single slab of wood, but the bed was decommissioned before that was accomplished. All in all the bolts, washers, and nuts were $44 of the entire bed cost of $80.
This type of bolted joint is called a moment connection.
The wood paneling was used because my mattress was memory foam and I didn’t want the added height of a box spring.
