The table is poplar and uses a bed type construction with bolts through the head and foot board legs into nuts in recessed pockets in the rails. The play surface sits on cleats all around the table. The train pieces are stuck on the table with brads and the risers for the tracks are glued on with gorilla glue. A layer of white formica laminate is on the opposite side of the train table stuck on with contact cemant so it can be flipped over into a play area for play dough, coloring, blocks etc. Someday I’ll put some casters on it. The train pieces are the Melissa and doug set that goes for about $90. The table has one coat of Bullseye seal coat then two coats of general finishes poly.

The Melissa and Doug tracks must fit together better than the cheap asian ones my son has. I’ve screwed them all down, but the gaps in the joints are so bad, I’ve considered filling them and sanding to make them line up right.

Awesome! My kid’s are 10 now and I bought something like yours minus the flipping part. Wish I would have built this. Your kids should love it.

Have your say...
