I started by purchasing a 3’ diameter black walnut log from the late great Simmie Again of Lambertville, NJ. I then took the log to Strimples Sawmill, because this was years before I owned my own sawmills, and lumber company.
The top is a bookmatched crotch, the tilt runners are mortised out for the expansion and contraction of the top, the birdcage is keyed, and the legs join the columb by sliding dovetails.

I finished the project years ago, but the pictures are of it stripped to bare wood. I did not like the origional finish, so I am refinishing it, havent decided with what yet. Im thinking danish oil, but am tempeted to take it to a friends shop for pre cat or conversion varnish.

Great job, You made a log into something beautiful, I harvested a couple slapps of apple that a friend gave me to make smoking chunks with. In about 3 years I wish to make a little hallway table from it.

Very nice. I like the bird cage area. Awesome job on the matching of the grain for the top.
