I found a small dead sapling (unknown wood) about 1 inch in diameter that had this strange growth directly in the middle of its trunk that bulged out to about 3 inch diameter for about a foot and a half before shrinking back to 1 inch. Naturally I cut it down to turn on the lathe, and boy am I glad I did. The grains that came from this piece are indescribable through words alone (and the photos hardly do them justice).
Originally I planned on making a weizen beer drinking glass, but it is amazing how little we have control of what the wood wants to become. Thus a goblet was born.
Finished with clear casting epoxy resin that is 100% food safe, even with alcoholic beverages.
-- What? I didn't "break" it, I was just testing its durability, and then I "placed" it in the woods because it's made of wood and I just thought he should be with his family.
