This souvenir I made for my friend Maria Carmen who is visiting her parents to Peru (native Croatians gone to Peru after WW2). She was born in Peru and came to Croatia 20 years ago, married here, get a job and start family.

This sign was made in middle age Slavic latter style called GLAGOLJICA (used form 9. to 19. century here) – see example on original 1000 years old stone inscription form Croatia called BAŠĆANSKA PLOČA (last photo).
I carved word HRVATSKA (local pronunciation of our state’s name CROATIA).

It was hand carved with small electric drill, first stained with walnut than with white stain. At the end I sealed it with varnish – intention was to make imitation of stone.

At the back I put some brief history description of GLAGOLJICA with translation and something about first mentioning of Croatian name in 9th century.

Looks like you got the stone finish. Hand carved also. Very nice gift for your friend.

That is beautiful work and a great theme. I like the stone look. I love the way the inscriptions finished out.
