Father's Day Screwdrivers

When we purchased Grace screwdriver shanks for the recent Screwdriver Swap, I bought a few extra sets for myself and for gifts. One of the sets went to my Father-in-Law for Father’s Day.

I laminated blanks from scrap White Oak and Walnut. The flat head drivers are 2 layers of Walnut with a layer of Oak in between. The Phillips drivers are the inverse. All drivers were turned on 3-axis with geometry similar to the ones I made for LJ ToddJB in the swap. The handles are finished with Dark Walnut Danish Oil and a couple of coats of paste wax.

I finished the drivers early last week and decided to make a box to house them with some more of the scraps. It was my first box build and it turned out pretty well. There were things I was not thrilled about and would have loved to re-do but I ran out of time so I went with what I could finish. Box construction is pretty obvious – corner blocks of walnut with dadoes to hold the Oak sides. I got the idea of using rare-earth magnets for the “latch” from the box that LJ ComboProf sent me in the swap. I lined the box with cork because I didn’t have time to fit inserts to keep the drivers from banging around and didn’t want the box to wear at the finish on the handles. The box is finished with 3 coats of BLO/Poly/MS mixture then 2 coats of paste wax.

Thanks for looking and comments and critiques are welcome as always!

I bet he was over the moon to receive that gorgeous set! Don’t know which I like more, the drivers or the box. Well done, my friend!!!! Box completes it perfectly.

Wow Ken, you did an exceptional job on these. The box is a beautiful addition to the set. First box? Wow!

Thanks for all the comments guys! I had intentionally not shown my FIL the drivers I made for the swap or even told him I was doing it so he wouldn’t have any idea I was making these for him. He was definitely floored and grateful. As of yesterday, he was refusing to use them ‘cause he didn’t want to scratch the black oxide finish on the shafts and trying to figure out where to display them in his house :-)

I’ve had several of these inquiries in the past few weeks. So, after seeing yours, I just shot off an e-mail to Dan at Grace USA to see if he might have plans to offer drivers “a la carte” in the future. And if not, if he’d be willing to do a minimum volume order of the sets again like he did for us in the Screwdriver Swap. When I hear back from him, if he’s willing to sell some, I’ll post a forum thread to gauge interest and see if we’ve got enough people to make it happen. Stay tuned…

That is some fine gift! Fantastic construction and turning. Were any of the swap drivers gunsmith parallel flat tip style, rather than beveled? And yes, please let us LJ’s hear if he’s willing to provide more bare unhandled shafts.

Sorry, you just missed a bulk purchase we did for more drivers from Grace. I’m sure we’ll do it again in the future but they’ll only do bulk buys, not individual shafts. FYI though, all of their flat drivers are parallel ground, not just the gunsmith ones. Thanks for the compliment!
