A simple box made with some not so simple wood.
The box is 12” long x 5 1/2” wide x 5 1/4” high. It has a 5 degree taper from the top to midway down and the corners and edges are rounded over. I made the top as a drop in and it is the same width as the base.
Now the wood – The bottom is a 5/16” ‘slab’ of common dark cherry, the sides and top started as 3/4” spalted, wormy curly cherry with a chestnut strip thru the middle of the top with a chestnut lift handle.
The lift out tray is 1/4 sawn wormy chestnut as are the dividers and the shelf that it sits on. I used psa red felt to cover the tray and box bottom.
Finish is 5 coats of water base polyeurathane sanded to 400 grit between coats.
