Building a fireplace and wanted an old barn beam mantle … found this at an barn wrecker..cut a few notches for returns and there you go.. hand hewn very old hardwood peice.. I can now appreciate the work and skill those barn builders put in cutting the frame on a barn .. this 7ft peice was very heavy and there must have been 30-49 foot timbers at that wrecker..

That’s awesome! Please post pics after you get it installed. How do you plan on attaching it to the fireplace? A few gold drywall screws would certainly look out of place!

Will send picture this will be embeded on top of the fireplace framing ..I put returns so you would see wood all round .. I thought a miter cut would not be appropriate for this and notched it ..

Definitely liking this. We are wanting to do something similar in our house. However, the beam will likely not have the short pieces you notched in there. I am very interested in knowing how you plan to attach this to the wall because that is my delimma too. I really do like the look you have going with this. How heavy is it?
