So I finally jumped on the band wagon and built a cutting board. It was really fun. I got to use my new rigid 13 inch planer and my new rigid 6 1/8 inch jointer. (I’ll probably do a review later on those…)
Its all hard maple and made into identically sized squares but I think it looks cool. I did take care to rotate each blank during the assembly to get an alternating grain pattern kinda giving it a checker board effect. The handles were routed out using a 1/2 inch straight bit and guide fences.
Finished with GF Salad Bowl Finish.
I gave the cutting board to my Mother in Law for her birthday and she loved it! Those brownie points will come in handy some day I’m sure…

Spencer, it turned out great. Congrats. The finish looks really clean as well.

The double sided handles look really cool.
Quick question for all those cutting board experts. I just built my own first set of boards in maple and also used GF salad bowl finish. Your pics show a lightening effect at the glue joints of the maple. I have the exact same effect in mine and I did an edge grain vs. your end grain. Does anyone have thoughts as to why/how this happens? Is it the glue’s penetration into the wood and not allowing the color to get in?

Very nice and the handles are unique : ) Your finish looks too nice to cut on though : )

Great cutting board! Did you make the bread too?
