I made this about 6 months ago
But before I made it, my wife has been hounding me to make a nick-knack shelf for about a year. (Yes a year)
The reason I didn’t want to make it is because she wanted it BLACK.
I do not like to paint wood with PAINT, I would rather use stains or varnishes, anything that would bring out the true grain pattern of the wood, NOT COVER IT UP. So after about a year of asking me to build it, she finally made me a deal, >> If I made her a nick-knack shelf and paint it BLACK she would not bitch at me the next time I buy a tool for my shop. << WOW, DEAL, SOLD and you guessed it. I BUILT it, and then I bought it, the tool that is, A DeWalt 12-1/2” Heavy duty portable Planer
But the real kicker is that I really liked it, I mean, it looks good (ok so she was right)

Hmmm, I wonder what my wife would take in trade for the drum sander that I “need”? OK, “WANT”. The shelf and planer both look great.

Does your wife need anything else made and painted black? I need a drill press….let’s talk.
Very nice shelves and decorated nice too.

I believe in marital terms, this is called “compromise”. In the real world, it’s called “bribary”. Either way, nice shelf and planer!
