The wood for this bowl was taken from trees that were cut down at the apartments I was living at in Wixom, Michigan, hence the title. Wixom is about a half hour northwest of Detroit, and Ford motor had a assembly plant there. They produced the Ford GT40 which was something to see buzzing around out there. Almost got into an accident watching one.
Anyway, the bowl. It’s made from pine, and I’ve read here other people refer to the black line as beetle kill, so I’m guessing that’s why the trees were cut down, they were slowly dying. It’s about 9 and a half inches in diameter by about 4 and a half inches tall. I smeared on boiled linseed oil and then finished it with the Beall buffing system, a great finish in my opinion. Thanks for looking.

I also want to thank Mark Wilson for talking me through posting projects on lumberjocks, which is pretty easy once you know how. Now that I know how, I’m off and running.

Gorgeous bowl, Mip. If they only knew how the bugs helped with wood working!!

Cheers, Jim

Very nice shape and the pine looks great on an end grain turning.

People always say that pine is such a “cheap” wood, but then something this nice comes from a piece…. makes you think twice. Looks good.

Nice bowl, Mip. I was paying a lot of attention when my neighbors maple tree got taken down last year. Got a lot of nice spalted wood from it. You just made me realize that I had better pay good attention, too, when the dying pine tree in my backyard gets cut taken down in the next few weeks. I might find some nice material there too. Thanks for posting.

PS. Used to live in Wixom, myself. Apartments along Pontiac Trail.

Michaelinthebasement, the apartments didn’t happen to be the Village apartments? On the corner of Beck rd. and Pontiac Trail?
