I built these benches using plans from Ana White as a guide. Since she does mostly butt joints, I added a dado joint on the base of the legs and a rabbet joint at the top of the legs to give some added stability. The wood is dimensional cedar (2×4 and 2×6), but since it’s exposed to full sunlight most of the day I wanted some added protection. I finished them with a coat of Sikkens ProLuxe in a semi-transparent chocolate brown color. While the finish wasn’t perfect, these are really for function and not a showpiece. I was very happy with how they turned out. In retrospect I could’ve cleaned up the joints a little better, but time was of the essence. All work was performed at the local woodworker’s guild except sand and finish. I think these will last a long time.
