Project Information

After finishing the spindle for my grandmother's chair, I tried my hand at making a bowl. It's my first one, and it turned out alright, I guess. I found out why you need to finish the bowl in one sitting. It warped a little overnight, and it wasn't totally circular the next day. This caused my sanding to not hit a couple spots. Lesson learned. Go back and rough it out if you let it sit for any amount of time.

The wood was a hormigo ************************* blank I bought from Woodcraft and it has a beeswax finish. I finally have a use (besides candles) for the beeswax from my bee colonies. My parents had their land logged last spring and they left the tops of the trees. They took down a bunch of oaks and maples, but I'm really interested in the top of the 3' diameter walnut. I should have plenty of wood to practice with.

Nice looking bowl, and a good idea to practicing on that walnut, be careful about leaving the pith in a finished bowl though as crack normally form from there.

Thanks for the heads up on the cracking from the pith. I'll definitely keep that in mind.

As a recent "first bowl" guy I can tell you that it most likely will not be your last. I think my last one was #14 and my wife is getting angrier and angrier I don't work on her projects any more.

Keep up the good work. And the pith thing is right on.
