This project was thought up by my wife, as we were trying to solve our lack of storage issues that we have in our house. Between toys and art supplies, or downstairs gets pretty cluttered on a regular basis. The original plan was to do something wall-to-wall, but that changed at some point, for some unknown reason(I still think we should’ve tried it).

Basically, we already had 2x Ikea Expedit/Kallax 1×5 shelves, and 1 Expedit/Kallax 2×4 shelf. She decided she wanted me to incorporate what we already had, instead of starting from scratch. After plenty of back-and-forth, we landed on this design.

It isn’t finished. I still need to add some 3/4” strips to all of the shelves, so they’re all the same depth. Then I need to add some cabinet doors that go up about half way on both of the end shelves. Then she wants a pull out cabinet on the left hand side, in order to hide the garbage can, and then possibly some more shelving on the right side for more of our kids’ stuff. And of course, everything needs to be painted.

In the end, it’s going to be wall-to wall. Just not the way I envisioned it.

To this point, I’ve been stuck doing Ana-white type projects around the house. This is the first one where I got to come up with a plan on my own. It’s by no means starting from scratch, but I enjoyed the fact that there wasn’t already a set of plans in place. I built it based off of our needs.

I look at it now, and there are plenty of things I should’ve done differently, but she really likes it, and that’s all that really matters.

Happy wife=happy life.

What do you think?

Good job on adding extra storage , And be careful about saying “IKEA” on LJ’s. To some on this site tht is considered Foul Language . :)

Whoops. My bad. Luckily that will be the only time I use that word.

I think its a great job. Nobody ever said every project has to be original.

If Momma is happy, thats all that matters.

Have your say...
