For Mother’s Day my wife asked me to make something to hold our miscellaneous electronics while charging. I thought of several ideas and finally went with this one. It had to hold two laptops, two smartphones, an ipod, a ipad, and my e-reader as well as a few sets of earbuds and a few memory sticks.
I used some pine that I previously found along the road in the form of an old headboard and foot board for a bed. After cleaning it up it had a nice look to the grain. The thickness is just under 3/4 inch. Chamfers on a few of the edges help give it a less clunky, thinner look to the edges. The whole thing measures about 15×15x6 inches.
[Below] To put this all together I cut shallow dadoes into the pieces to help align the parts.
I made the long stowage drawer from some thinner ‘drawer wood’. I was amazed at how well it fit in the space. I must be getting better at drawers.
The finish is danish oil, a finish I’m starting to really like.
[Below] The dadoes allowed me to test fit the piece with only one clap to hold it together.
[Below] This is the disorder that this project has cleaned up.
[Below] And the mandatory clamp up photo. Notice I’m even using my wood C-clamp. The darn thing works! I should make some more.
