I made this box to raffle off at a Relay for Life event to raise money for cancer research. My wife’s best friend and 2 of my friends mothers have died of cancer in recent years so I figured this is the least i could do.

The box is made up of curly sapele, curly maple with a walnut bottom. The finish is just a spar urethane finish thinned and wiped on with shop towels and rubbed out with grey scotchbrite and lundmarks paste wax.

I laid the dovetails out to account for the 1/8” taken off by the table saw to separate the lid. The box size was determined by the piece of curly sapele as I didn’t want to waste any. A rabbet was cut into the top and bottom to glue it on. The knob was turned from a piece of spalted hackberry elm (as far as the samples I sent off could tell me) that I screwed up by drilling all the way through. Didn’t have time to make another so it had to do.

It came out well despite the speed required to get it done on time.

Beautiful job. Love the look. Hope it raises lots of money. Lost dad to cancer November of 14, lost lifelong friend at 59 a few months ago.

That turned out really nice. A fitting use for the wood it is made from.
