Murphy’s Redesigned Butterfly Art Box for Mark April 1st 2016

I’m finally getting around to posting my first hardwood box which I designed subsequent to my previous “What If” box. The parameters for this box were defined by the customer, Mark Hillard an artist, friend, and consultant in my creative process. (When I screw things up (Murphy) I talk to Mark and get perspective.) It is appropriate that it was completed April 1st 2016.

I want to express my appreciation for support, guidance, and inspiration to “Andy” for his Art Boxes, Greg “thesoutherner” for words of wisdom and encouragement re: box development, and Al “the BoxGuy” for his “how to” blogs. Bob “Grizzman” for continuing to confront/and encourage, Kiefer for his meticulous approach to boxmaking, and Randy”Blackie” for information and support.

The box was started after completing my prototype test box. The dimensions and hinge were customer determined. He wanted a piano hinge and for it to be the size of the old vinyl record albums. It was designated to be his “treasure box” and that deserved a lock/hasp. I found a Chinese Butterfly Hasp on eBay which matched up with my Intarsia experiment walnut pattern that would have been too busy on the “What If” box.

I was definitely mentored by Murphy on this one but managed to complete the box albeit different than originally planned. This included having a major meltdown after Murphy made me cut the bottom off the box instead of the top!

I am satisfied in the concept but not the execution. I’m also happy to say it was completed, shipped and received. He said “It was beyond my expectations, thank you!’ He also reported his wife was ”Gobsmacked!” when she saw it. (I had to look that up…LOL!)

I will post a blog of my misadventures with Murphy at a later time as its spring and maintenance projects are waiting.

Thanks for looking and your comments, wisdom and humor are always welcome!

The box looks great. I love the grain pattern on the top.

Thanks Peter,

It is a book-matched branch from my walnut tree. I then fitted the center pieces to look like one book-matched cut ( my version of intarsia? LOL!

Excellent box Tom…
I would have never known about the bottom snafu from the photos if you had not mentioned it. You are definitely not the first person to cut off the wrong end of a box (don’t ask me how I know this fact)...
The matching grain on top is really an eye catcher. What did you use to line your bottom?

As many have always said… we are probably the only ones who will notice our corrected mistakes…You made it into a creative design.

What is the next project?

Nice looking box Thomas! Love the book match. At a glance I thought I saw a butterfly on the top! Your clamp’s made me think about a neighbor that once made fun of me when he saw a bunch of clams on a boat I was building. He said GEEEESSSS got enough clamps on that? He was clueless about woodworking LOL! Nice work on a great looking box!

Greg,

Thanks, My wife preferred a faux leather material I got off Amazon. Had problems with spray adhesive. Bought the heavy duty stuff. Caused bubbles in the thin material. Could thing I did a test run????

Right now trying to use up materials on a lawn tractor/wood shed.

Fine woodworking project will be a couple of night stands. But life and Murphy????

Hey Thomas, I’m saving the downdraft project for the fall. My shop is so hot in the spring and summer here in Florida, it can be unbearable to work in there. I’m working in the garden and remodeling our outdoor solar heated shower at the moment. :)

Tony,

Working outside myself. Remember 2×4 not being a nominal dimension. Have old wood from barn rehab that is old, hard and 2” x 4” trying to adapt it for a tractor shed frame.

Tom, it sounds like you’ve got some very old 2” x 4” timber there. Tough as nails hey!
