Double Mushroom

This is a stump of honey lotus, since it was a crotch piece i wanted to make it double headed from the get go. The spacing was tricky as even with the Tiny 12 inch carving bar there was very little room to maneuver. The pictures don’t really do the base of the piece justice as when it is sitting in front of you It just flows so well.
I finished it with several coats of Watco, Dark walnut and Cherry, then clear coated it with Spar-urethane.

Really nice carving, coloring, creative!

Great idea ! Way to carry it out . I did a single shroom out of a 28” diameter red oak stump. I couldn’t afford to have it ground up so I shaped it and treated it with waterlox wood preservative. Big & silly, but it looks a hell of a lot better than a stump left to rot. Now it is a big mushroom left to rot. I like yours better ! don s.

Wow! This series has me envisioning a Pub with all of the chairs, barstools, shelves and tables being mushrooms . You maximize the natural colors of each layer of the tree and for me that somehow keeps it “alive” – I’m sorry I can’t really articulate it any better. You totally and successfully escape the trap of it being a caricature or a stage prop or at the bottom of the spectrum (imo) painted wood.

I’m serious about that pub. Keep up the great work (and this series pls) Cheers Q-Fly!

PS – Oh, and I just named your pub “Mycelium” LOL – sorry

Mycelium, or actively growing mushroom culture, is placed on a substrate—usually sterilized grains such as rye or millet—and induced to grow into those grains.
