Here I started to get really ambitious with the carving but chose canadian red cedar which was not such a good idea and had to use wood hardener and super glue a bit to finish the exercise. I was actually copying the design from an old ivory carved brooch family heirloom which is only postage stamp sized.

Nice work, I’ve always been afraid to carve cedar. You have confirmed my fears. Did you get a lot of slivers too?

Yes Topamax , the wood is quite friable and flakes off easily along the grain. i would not try to use it again for carving. My tools are very inferior and if I go on carving I will get some good Swiss steel .You need very sharp tools and also a technique that avoids cutting towards any part of your own body as severe injury can otherwise happen very easily and in a split second.
