It has been awhile since I uploaded a project. I have been kinda working on three different projects, plus the workbench. But Sunday, I thought get stuck in and get something done. So I focussed on getting this mallet done.
It is made of some scraps that were lying around. The handle is probably a bit of Yellow Box (Eucalyptus) and is very hard with some tiny borer holes through it. Not enough to affect the touch but visible.
I have no idea what the head is but it has a magic color. The photos don’t do it justice. And it feels like silk to touch.
The whole thing is finished in raw linseed oil just like my old Cricket bat when I was a kid. Cricket – a rather silly came played with a bat, a ball and two sets of stumps (look it up in Wikipedia if you dont know what it is).
I made a mallet with a bigger head in my woodworking class but it was just not right for use with chisels. So I was motivated to make something with a smaller head. This is the result. The handle is too long but hey I can live with that and I am not going to shorten it. Might have to make another one.
Good little project for practicing skills such as mortice and tenon, planing round, and planing generally. Still got a long way to go, the handle is not a perfect fit to the head but it works.
Cheers to one and all. Have a merry and SAFE Christmas. May 2010 fulfill all you hope for it.
