Project Information

A good exercise in mortise/tenon (36 joints) and half-lap joinery. This is version 2 of a Xmas gift. The first version was bigger than it had to be. It will replace an ugly metal newspaper collector in the living room. Uses a fair amount of lumber, maple and walnut in this case. The 2 rosewood plug denote where to grab to lift the bin. If you grab the other side you dismantle the bin. Easy to wrap as it can be knocked down. All surfaces hand planed and oiled.

wow, incredible. its comforting to know that crazy 3-D half laps are pretty much the only way to make those joints - I used a bunch of them for my lamp project. Still, i think if i did something like that again I would use dowels instead of M&T.

I really love this design, and the wood choice is great. those rabbeted walnut panels, especially - with those grey/purple streaks. was the walnut air dried?
