Walnut and Maple End Table

Project by JT Thomas posted 829 days ago 796 views 5 times favorited 21 comments Add to Favorites Watch

This is the first of 3 tables for the living room where the entertainment center is located.

Construction is all solid wood except the top which is maple plywood. This was done to eliminate the wood movement problems with mitered frame of walnut.

Drawer was made using dovetail construction and composed of steamed beech for the secondary wood, and figured maple for the front.

Inlay on the top is hard maple.

The main construction was done with integral mortise and tenon. I used the Leigh FMT to create the mortise and tenons. A great jig. The construction is extremely acurate. The tenons fit tight enough to push together without a hammer, but give a nice “pop” when pulled apart.

Custom handle was made to match the design on the entertainment center and was also done using the FMT from a solid piece of walnut.

The finish is natural with satin poly (6 coats) for protection.

One down and 2 to go.

Nice table and entertainment center. By the time you finish everything though it will be difficult to watch television in the room – your eyes will keep drifting to the beautiful furniture. Good job.

Thanks to all for your comments. I am always impressed at how many people actually look at the project posts, and take to time to comment.

For Chris and others that did not see the entertainment center, here is the link.

Echoing what others have said but, excellent choice on the materials. It looks very precisely constructed. How much time did you put into it?

Thanks for the comments. As for the time to construct, I don’t really know. I do this on the side and work a night here and a weekend there. I know it took me about 2 times as long as I thought it would. :)
