My Dad needed a place to store his media gear—DVR, DVD Player & Receiver. I convinced him to steer clear of IKEA and Pottery Barn and let me take a stab at it.
My first real attempt at designing and then building a piece of furniture from scratch. I’ve done a handful of built-ins and copied a few pieces (dressers, end tables, etc…) from magazines but this was the first time I’ve actually used Sketchup to create something of my own.
Used strips of maple to create the vented doors and drawer pull.
Drawer is shallow enough for a surge protector to fit behind.
Center strip of walnut on back panel is removable for cable mgmt (magnets hold in place)
Haven’t tried dove-tails yet so I opted for doweled-rabbets to attach the drawer front
Drawer is sized to hold DVDs under the sliding tray for remote(s), etc.
Anyway… Not perfect by any means but I learned a lot—including the realization that I want a bandsaw—- and I enjoyed the process. Now that it’s been delivered I miss it already.

the vented doors look awesome and compliment the curved legs very well!! Great job on the walnut grain pattern and maple strips for the drawer! Are you going to make one for yourself now too :)

This is an amazing piece Todd. It looks like it would be difficult to build, especially with the shaped lattice work on the front. Your workmanship looks flawless and the design looks beautiful and unique. Your dad is a lucky guy to get this. I will be looking eagerly forward to your next piece.

I love the lines and choice of wood. The design is Functional, contemporary with an Asian flair …I like! Well done direct to favourite.
Thanks for posting.

Great job! I love the curved legs and the colors go well together. I think the doweled rabbits go well with the overall design. Thanks for sharing.
