This is a violin scroll I carved out of some mystery wood I got from a traditional sawmill near my home. It’s just the scroll, and it’s never gonna be part of a complete violin, but I really enjoyed doing it, and think I might carve another one. While carving I learned a lot of things as to how to do this better and quicker, so that will help when or if I decide to repeat this project.

Nice work! I love those. Make a lid and you will have a nice little box.

That turned out nice. I was thinking of trying a cooking spoon with a scroll finial.

I really like this video on violin making. The scroll carving starts about 21 minutes into it.

I noticed that he has long handles on his gouges, so I tried one:

I’m really happy with it because I can pare and use my shoulder more than my arm, which is less tiring and gives more control.
