Simple little box

Picked up a Stanley No. 45 plane down at the Magnolia Jamboree. Doe requested that I rehab the plane. The plane itself was the easy part. The original box the plane was in, USPS had just about FUBAR it. Decided to build a new box, but try to match as close to the original one as I could. Corners were finger joints, my first ever. Hand cut, as the tablesaw that cut have cut them is long gone. Found some brass hinges, and a latch.

OEM box had cutter storage down on the end, I had to duplicate that. There was also a 1×1 at an angle glued to the bottom. It is also in the new box. Stanley painted their box, mine used a “Witch’s Brew” blend, then a top coat of gloss poly. I left the insides alone, for now. I may just sit the old box on a shelf. Looks like I got fairly close to the look. Wood is mainly Poplar. mostly 3/8” thick. It was fun project to do.

Nice job looks like a good home for the plane.

The grain pattern for the front of the box is terrific. Nothing worse than ruler drawn grain pattern running perfectly horizontal across a piece like this. You did a great job of making it authentic.

Looks good Bandit. Should protect the plane and last longer than the original.

I love boxes that that are made specifically for the shop in order to keep our tools and equipment safe.

Another nice project Bandit. I hope to give the box joint trick a whirl myself soon.

Labels have been added..

Yeah, yeah, will need to change the bottom one to a Roxton Pond, Que. label….

Top label came out a bit on the blue side of green. Close enough…..for a reproduction.
