This was a somewhat fun little project, and I like how it turned out.
I visited my sister and brother-in-law over Thanksgiving. Jason (my brother-in-law) happens to be a banjo maker, so of course we got talking about woodworking. Since I’d recently gotten into turning, I figured I’d take a gander at his cutoff bin and found several old claro walnut dowel pegs that he didn’t like the sizing on, so I took them home.
The first of then turned down to this pen and letter opener set. The blanks are a 2 piece laminate, but you’d never know it unless you were looking for it. I’d never worked with claro before, its really a lovely wood.
(I also got a 2’ x 5” x 5” spalted apple plank that I hope to turn some bowls and maybe a hollow form from once I get the tools, I can’t wait to work with that piece!)

They’re press fit into aluminum tubes that get glued into the blank before turning.
