In my previous postiing of this project I made the mistake of treating it as a blog with ongoing updates of progress. I did correct my mistake and turn it into a blog but now I am finally finished! So here it is for all to see.
This is a simple slabbed coffeetable with black walnut breadboard ends and hand cut dowels of some very hard and dark but indeterminate wood (wish i knew what it was). the dowels are really just long wood buttons set flush with the walnut to cover the fasteners (and Don, yes i did allow for moderate wood movement, thanks for the advice) The top seems to be white oak and the legs are red oak, so there is some disagreement with the color scheme but for my first major piece of custom work, i’m okay with it. I glad to be finished with it but at the same time, it is over all to quickly. Most of the excitement is in the actual creation of the piece in stead of the use of it. But on the bright side now i can start another project!
For more pictures of the table check out my webalbum
You can see the progress there as well as the finished piece in more detail.

Looking at it (scale notwithstanding) I expect the top to lift off or flip over to become a pool table.
hmmm, now there’s an idea for the dining room…
Very nice.

I like the “disagreement with the color scheme.” You have an excellent table.

yakerjax, i really did love the grain too, it is truly stunning in a way that the pictures can’t really do justice.
scott that is an interesting idea but one that will never be done by me, strangely enough i’m not sure my wife would go for it.
i’m not sure if i’m following in His footsteps but i do think it’s really cool that Jesus was a lumberjock too.
thank ya’ll for the compliments on the table, it really felt good to hit that button post your project
i’m not really sure what the next project will be but i’m leaning towards another coffeetable, i have some great ideas for how some shapely legs and skirt combo. prob hard maple butcherblock with blackwalnut highlights.

Hello Isaac;
—-great table there!
Your table top has really come out great with the white oak and red oak color scheme….oh yes, lets not forget the walnut breadboard ends. I would say that my eyes are drawn to your style and design used in the legs of the table, which in my opinion give support to the top….
I’m glad to see this one came through the process so well, as an example of your capabilities with ‘wood art’! And yes I also know exactly what you mean when you say; ”Most of the excitement is in the actual creation of the piece, instead of the use of it.”
Thank you for sharing this one with us and….
GODSPEED,
Frank

that’s a helluva slab of timber that you’ve made the top from! Very impressive!

wow thanks guys and gal!
i know this probably belongs in the blog and it’s probably already been said but I’ll say it again here, “You know you’re a lumberjock when your first thought at 6am is how many new posts have been added to your project and you can’t wait to log on and see, breakfast is second”.
thank you for sharing your compliments with me, it’s been a great journey as this thing came together. and of course like every project I build it just makes me love the wood more and more. Ya’ll can probably say the same thing.
and Skinna, yeah the whole thing prob wieghs in at around 45 to 50 lbs, so while it’s not too heavy it’s definitely no slacker either. what is a cut lunch anyway (if you’ll forgive my N American ignorance)

Frank, I guess it’s because it’s so early… but I just got your play on words. and I must say I love your sense of humor. When I first read your post I was thinking only about style then I just re-read it and got a good laugh out of it too…thanks.

Wow, really nice work. It inspires me to go through the wood pile and put together something like this. My little table yesterday leaves me feeling a little empty after seeing this. Great work.
