After having used a store bought mallet for years BL (before lathe), I decide on a whim to see how fast I could turn one and apply a finish. Had a bunch of 12/4 hard maple on hand and a nice piece of cedar. It’s not perfect, but heck, it’s a tool that will be used! Just a bit over 15 minutes later had a nice looking mallet that also is functional!

Nice!I made one out of dogwood, no finish and not pretty but often used. I occasionally turn them out of poplar (firewood) and give to non woodworker friends to use for whatever needs a bit of persuasion. One fisherman said good for knocking big fish in the head to keep them from flopping around in his boat.

Nice mallet. I know what you mean about it being made to use, but it looks pretty perfect to me. Fifteen minutes is great, it takes me that long to drive to town. Nothing like making your own tools, great job.
