Well finally I got something to show anyway,,, Between getting my daughter ready to go back to school and helping Randy with all his new toys and projects (lathe, twin seater bench (will share soon)).. I have been sneaking in a few minutes here and there to learn how to chip carve… I love love love it..
This is practice lines I have made and there are lots of errors on here but for my first time I really enjoyed learning and hope that I can hone my skill and be able to share something more later but for the time being this is my work..
I just finished putting a quick coat of stain on just so I can see what it will look like so the stain work was just a hurried job so I can tell better where I need to concentrate…
So I thought I would catch up and show you all I do more than just sit here on the computer teehee. I love coming here to see everyones beautiful work… Oh if only I had more time so much to do and so little time..
Well thanks for looking and definatly I can use any tips and experiences anyone wants to share…
Thanks for sharing your projects as I really enjoy looking..
Cheryl

Looks like good practice. Hehe…I think I’d chip carve a frame around it and call it art. It has a nice look and will be a great reminder of where you started in years to come.

Putting stain on for “training” is probably a great idea.
The folks I know who do chip carving generally do not stain that which they chip (carve?) They may stain an accent line or an edge but the little chippers are left alone.
I think the reason they don’t is that the stain would show the little mistakes .Hee Hee.
Keep up the good work.
What’s up with the lather lessons?

Lather lessons,X?? Is she learning to be a barber? LOL!! Good start, Cheryl. Like Bob said, keep it safe to look back on to see how far you’ve come. I can carve leather but on wood I’m a clutz. Keep on keepin’ on!

the top line in the second pix—well done, I found/find that half of my little centre pieces get chipped out when I try that.

Cheryl:
Great practice. What is the wood? Some nice hard chunk of Osage Orange?

Mind exercise, yes, but did you know that during the II World War the military used chip carving as therapy for its soldiers? Nice start to a very rewarding hobby Cheryl.
