A good first attempt.. as a cutting board it is fine… as a chess board there is a little slippage and the squares are just a bit misaligned.. over all GOOD.

Grains are perfect for symmetry, there are no swirls is what I mean. Very nice.
Always nice to go light and dark contrast…what kind of wood did you use ?

I use pine and another wood that I don’t know the name Sorry !!!

The finish is “lasure” in french I don’t know the word in English

Greetings Digger: I think the English word you are looking for is lacquer, but not sure. Sounds good anyway.
I’m not up on my French too good. lol lol.
