My two boys share a room, and have been asking for bunk beds, so this spring I finally built them one. In the interest of time and money, I wanted to go with 2×4 (and 2×6) construction, but I also didn’t want it to look like it was just thrown together. I found these plans online, which was just what I was looking for. I also modified them slightly by using hanger bolts to mount the rails to the head/foot board in order to make it easier to assemble and disassemble later on. I also decided to extend Martin Brubaker’s idea in order to cover the ends of all the rails with a routered out “cap.” The bed was finished with two coats of Deft waterborne clear wood finish. The last photo is mostly just to show how undersized my shop is for this size of project. You know your shop is too small when you have to climb over your table saw to make a cut.
