One of the Ministries here in Kabul was in need of a new reception center and security post. The current setup was basically and old camper off the back of a truck was the security post and a plywood box was the reception desk. I put in a picture of the reception desk so that you can get an idea. We could not find the funds to build the center, so we were able to get some old shipping containers and convert them into an open building. I volunteered the time and some good folks back in the States donated some tools to make it where we could put something together. It was difficult to get the supplies for the build because we are not allowed off camp, so we pulled a few strings and managed to get out in civilian clothing to hit up the local wood bazaar. With the supplies obtained, I grabbed a couple of helpers from the office and we set off to build them a new reception center with a desk for security, a desk for information, and two offices. Nothing was square or straight, so it was a custom build for just about every piece.
We went back out on day two to get some more wood only to find out that the entire wood bazaar burned down. There was still smoke rising from the ashes when we arrived. Wow.
After two weeks of spare time, we managed to build a reception center that the entire Ministry was proud of. All the children going into the day care now passes through this center, so I am glad we were able to make a difference.
I put together a PowerPoint presentation of the build, so if you would like to see it, send me your e-mail address and I can forward a copy. (the file is about 8 MB, so keep that in mind)
