A Temporary Vanity

My wife has been wanting a vanity. Since we moved into our house three years ago she has been using an old table to do her makeup and hair at. I am going to build her one out of solid wood soon but this was just meant to be done quickly. She drew what she wanted and asked how quick I could build it. I did it in a week (with only a 1-2 hours a day to work on it). I will be building something more elegant than this in a while.

Anyway, it was done with maple plywood and maple edge banding. The maple edge banding and drawer fronts came from a coffee table that was being thrown out that I saw on my way to work one morning. I have hung a mirror on the wall in the back also.

I very simple joinery for the drawers with the drawer lock joint (not sure if that is the correct term). I also pinned the drawers and the banding on the top with bamboo skewers (liking those a lot for many things recently). I just routed a simple profile on the fronts to give it some depth.

All in all she is happier with this than the cheap ones we saw laying around at the different stores, cheaper too.

Hey Kaleb,
You have done a fantastic job with the resources you had. My wife and I come home with someone’s “trash” almost every week and turn it into a treasure. It would have taken me a few months or more to make that. Looks great.

Good job!

My bet is that this temporary solution is going to serve well for a long-long time as it’s good looking and sturdy.

Thanks a million guys. That means a lot from you two.

She is happy with it for now. Hopefully I will be building something with a live edge top for a permanent one for her (in a few months/year+).
