Solid birch sideboard with walnut bead detail around the door and drawer openings. Mortise and tenon construction throughout. There are a couple things I am particularly proud of about this piece. One is the wood grain selection. The narrow pieces (rails, stiles and legs) were milled from the riftsawn portions (straight grain) of the wide boards I had. I then used the flatsawn portions (more dramatic grain pattern) for the panels and drawer fronts. The drawer fronts come from the same board for grain continuity. The upper flat panels of the sides were cut from a section of the board so as to have a circular grain pattern right in the middle of the piece. The second thing I was really happy about is the use of Brusso knife hinges. These are so elegant and sweet, I love them. The one thing I would change is the edge treatment of the top. I am not in love with it. The bottom is made with frame and (flat) panel construction with the expansion gap at the back of the panel. Back is made from 5/16” thick tongue and groove boards. Finish is polymerized tung oil (applied by the customer himself). 56” W x 38” H x 18” D.

Senomozi,
This is one of the nicest pieces of furniture I’ve seen posted on LJ’s. Nicely done.

I really like this project. The dark contrast molding sets it off well. Great job on the legs as well.

Mike said: “what did you use for drawer slides?”
I used Blum Tandem Plus concealed slides because I did not want to see them in a traditional piece like this but I wanted the smooth operation of a mechanical slide. To some extent I regretted this choice because I had to built the drawers 1/2” deeper to accomodate the slides and I felt it made the drawers look too big in proportion to the doors. Customer had explicitly asked for a certain amount of usable drawer height so I could not make them smaller.
