Mother-in-Laws Bird feeder or Lumber Jocks: The New Wave Of Family Communication.

While I was in Kansas City, I stayed at my mother-in-laws home, and I noticed a couple of my early projects, when i was getting back into woodworking after a few years.

Project 2: A bird feeder. Made approx 10 years ago.

I made 4 of these and I don’t know the status of any of the others. I didn’t even keep one for myself. It was a Christmas gift to some friends and my wife said make one for my mother.

Made with white and red oak. No plans just started cutting wood. I saw a gazebo feeder at Home Depot and i liked the design.

This was made before I knew or understood wood movement. There are some cracks in the bottom and the roof panels are not stuck too good.

I used Polyurethane glue and it doesn’t look like it stood up too well to the outdoors.

The seed tube is a 2 liter soda bottle with the top cut off and a plastic water pipe inserted inside the bottle to give a bigger opening for seed insertion.

I used an Exacto knife to cut out the bottom pieces for the seeds to slide out. There was a small wall built around the bottom to keep the seeds from falling out on the ground.

The posts and roof joists were cut with the 30 deg angle for a six sided feeder and the slots for the roof panels and seed supports were also cut with the 30 deg angle. The roof panels were tapered to give a flat top and thicker through the panel itself.

“This was made before I knew or understood wood movement.”

Kevin understands your wood movement in your barn all too well…the wood moves from a pile to the wood rack every time he’s there :)

Did you get cinnamon?

Or did you edit it to say that? Or am I going crazy?

Kevin is currently hand sanding our bedroom wall because we are repainting it. He’s not a happy camper right now :)

I told him, as i am surfing the internet, that it stresses me out to have all the furniture in the middle of the room. He gave me a very evil look after that comment:) Not sure why. haha

have you two ever heard of a Phone? Or maybe this newfangled thing called an instant messenger? :)) By-the-way, Karson, I like the basics. I passed up all of the really fancy furniture postings just to eyeball this… Simple in construction, but the gazebo design makes it probably one of the nicest bird feeders in the commune. And my mind starts thinking of bird chairs and watering bowels so they never have to leave the house.:))

Any ideas why the polyurethane glue did not hold up? Did you dampen the wood before applying the glue? Maybe the glue wasn’t as good ten years ago as it is now. I love the jointery on this bird feeder. Very fancy roof.
