jig router

Project Information

here is a router jig i made tonight to help me clean some boards that had a bunch of grit and grime on them. its just a piece of particle board from a shelf i had laying around attached to 2×4s on each side. i added some metal shelf brackets to the sides to keep it from flexing. the router is the $20 harbor freight model and it works great. i just routered out a recess to fit the base and the toggle clamps hold it in position.

you can also use this jig to flatten 1 side of a board if you dont have a jointer.

It doesn't drag too much on your work surface?

Cleaver idea. I think I would add some kind of slick material to the feet. Nice job!

no it slides just fine. i jointed the 2×4s so they are smooth and so is the bench top

Looks like it serves its purpose quite well. If it drags a bit, just wax the bottom of the 2×4's with paste wax.

Very clever! I wonder if the bend in the main crossing board that supports the router is a problem. Do you get a cupping effect in your planed boards? I would add a piece of angle iron to stiffen the support board if cupping is a problem.

I don't think there will be a cupping effect, even if the main board sags, because it moves with the router - so the router is always at the same elevation above the bench. If the router moved along the main board, there would be cupping.

Very clever. It would also work to flatten end grain cutting boards.

charles, i added metal shelf brackets that i had laying around to each side of the main board to stiffen it up and prevent any sagging. however like jjohnston mentioned there shouldnt be any problems with cupping as the router stays in the same position along on the board

doug thats a good idea

Such a great idea and for $20 you can dedicate that little router to the jig forever ! : ) What type of bit are you using ?
