Purpleheart Box

I finished this box in January after coming across a beautifully figured piece of purpleheart. The figure is really unlike anything I have seen before in this wood. The lid is edge-glued strips of different hardwoods, laminated to a fitted piece of maple to retain the lid when the box is closed. I feel that with the right selection of wood in regard to color, contrast and figure, even technically simplistic projects can be quite striking. Finished with several coats of pure tung oil.

Nice box. I’m not sure the fictures show the “beautiful figure” in the purpleheart. Kinda just looks like most purpleheart I’ve ever worked with.
Are you worried at all about the wood in the lid expanding/contracting and splitting apart?

@Ryan Sparreboom

Realistically, the construction of the lid isn’t the most stable design in the world, but the pupleheart and bubinga are quarter-sawn, so I’m not terribly concerned about it. I finished this almost a year ago and the lid is still straight. I probably wouldn’t make a box like this again though because I have learned a great deal about wood movement since I finished this project.

Have your say...
