This is what I’m considering my first project. I decided a better place to store my kites was needed. I ended up making some shelves and a french cleat system. Shown in the Sketchup diagram is the rod holder I made later from some leftovers. To keep it from sliding away from the shelves I simply stapled some fiberboard to the bottom of it and slid it under the shelves.
It’s all made from some cedar that we had milled and yellow pine from a barn we had blow down. I was going to dado the shelves in, but after I had planed them down to thickness I discovered that the planer hadn’t been set quite right and made one side thicker than the other. So I simply screwed them into the sides. I was worried that everything wouldn’t fit together quite right and square, but in the end it all ended up just about perfect. I was quite happy at that. It is all finished with a semi-gloss polyurethane.
The shelves are about 10 1/2” deep, 4’ 9” wide, and 5’ 2” tall with 11” between each shelf.
I’m sharing the SketchUp plans here. Feel free to use it as a base for any of your own plans.
Only problem is that I can’t find any boxes that fit right on the shelves to hold the shorter stuff. I guess I’ll just have to make them sometime!

@ DaveR
Wow! I didn’t realize those things stayed around and I had never noticed the reverse faces command. My fix was just to paint them white. A quick Google search with the proper terminology located the commands for me. I had been having some troubles off and on with SketchUp crashing, so maybe this will help. Many, many thanks for that comment.
