I love my Veritas mortise gauge and I have a couple other marking gauges, but I didn’t have one that could reach across a 10” board. Last night I took some scraps and knocked together a wedge style panel gauge.
I used hard maple for the fence, sapele for the beam, and walnut for the wedge. I used a large sewing needle for the pin.
The fence is 6” wide and 3” tall from 3/4” stock.
The beam has a 12” reach from the fence to the pin.
Do not try and cut a sewing needle, score it with a file first, then snap it off.
