Here are three items that I have made over my woodworking lifetime. First, there is a tavern table on the bottom. I made it in 1996 when I priced the cost of cheap import knockoffs stained to look like “good wood”. Overall, I was going for a rustic country look. It’s been refinished once, and is due to have the top stripped again to get out marker stains from the kids.

On the tabletop, there are two bowls that I’ve recently turned from 150 year old ash tree. There is an implied utility in the bowls that upon further inspection, can not be. Most people expect that a bowl is a functional item, but carpenter ants have rendered the bowl on the right “useless”- it’s full of bug trails! These bowls are also turned with round bottoms, and they rock and spin (without losing their contents) gently before settling into a “normal bowl-like stance.”

We do this because we want to- not because we “have to”.

That bowl would function as a strainer – albeit a slow working one. Beauty and utility restored!

I like the “have to” comment at the end. My sentiments exactly. – well not mine, but the ones I feel compelled to labor under! ;)

you put a lot of thought into your work… a bowl is not “Justa” bowl.

Beautiful pieces

Nice bowl forms – what are their respective sizes? What kind of lathe do you turn on?

I’d like to see the whole table if you’re up for posting it! And, what kind of wood did you use for the table?

Dorje-

The smaller little ash bowl is about 5” across and 2” high. The other one is probably 7”x5”.

The table is hard maple, and needs to be refinished badly. crayons, markers and kids scratching their forks for no good reason for the last 9 years… has taken it’s toll.

Useless? Where do you think I drop spare screws when working with them? In my “bad” bowls. I probably use the bad ones more than I use the “good” ones!

Have your say...
