The Oct/Nov issue of Woodcraft magazine has the plans for David Wakefield’s Tail Thumping Beaver animated toy.
The beaver’s tail moves up and down as you push it forwards or backwards. A cam attached to the rear wheels moves the tail up and down.
I made up a batch of 10 beaver toys using poplar wood.
The clearance for the cam and tail in the main body of the beaver is made using a dado stack on the table saw.
The tail is made using the common scroll saw method of pasting a pattern on sides of the blank, and sawing it out, yielding curved pieces.
Wakefield recommends dipping the beavers in food grade mineral oil, which I did.
I made a youtube video showing the beaver in action. It is a fun toy when it is in action :)
You can see my Trials & Tribulations of building these beavers at my woodworking web site.
