Simple gates from the slash pile
Pic #2 and #3 show the gates being assembled on the frames.
Pic#4 is a picket developed from a pile of slash scrap. Cut to width ,kiss the back on the jointer , cross cut.
Pic#4 shows a good case for foaming glues as the glue comes out of the inside of the cracked picket .
Pic#5 is a half-lap joint I use in frame construction. Can be accomplished on a bandsaw. These joints are 6×6 on a 2 inch thick cedar board. All reclaimed materials. People love these funky little gates .

Simple looks best.
What is the wood you used for the frame?

Thanks for the comments. The frames are incense cedar , fire killed ,with about 40 rings to the inch (old growth ) .I also did the arched garage doors and shutters in the back ground of the first pic .

I certainly love those funky little gates, too. I love seeing the thick limb cutoffs poking out of the boards. I also love that you’re using your scrap to make them. Very green.

Hi Jim , no chests in sight today . What’s next ? I started work today on the interior millwork package for the Fallbrook Pueblo . They have their own blog thing going as it is the most energy efficient home built to date. I just bid the custom millwork package on a another new house ( 14287 square feet ) ! and on a very old original settlers home in this area .I hope to chronicle the design and fabrication of these period pieces here on LJ in this historical site . These three big jobs plus an endless stream of planterboxes , gates, stair treads , flooring , tables , counter tops , restaurant tables , and a bunch of slab bar tops for all over the state . That’s all that comes to mind without looking at the order-clipboards in the shop. I give my self a headache !!! LOL

So simple – and I like the idea of turning waste log jackets into income. I forgot to add that on some of them I sandblast for a really old worn look.
