I have wanted to make a pen for a long time but did not have a lathe. then Stress Free Woodworking issued the challenge to make a pen to be sent to the troops and I had to join in! So this was made with a pen kit from Woodcraft. the blank was cut from a piece of wood marked as Mahogany but I dought it. I am guessing it is Sapele.
I bored out the shaft hole with a 1/4” brace and bit then enlarged it a bit with a rat tale to fit the brass sleeve. next it was just an issue of finding a way to hold the small pieces while I carved them.

In the end I am extreamly happy with the outcome, and love knowing a troop will get it.

If you want to see the full build I put it into a quick video here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YvVnZX7hpg0

I like it. i actually bought a small lathe but don’t have much interest in turning pens. But carving one? Now that is something I might try (to learn). That’s a great idea.

it was lot of fun to learn! and I think i liked it a lot more then I would on a lathe! people will look at you funny if you said you carved it rather then turning it. I have thought the next time the cross section would not be round but shaped to fit the fingers.
