My first bowl. Be kind.

So, I took a bunch of cull wood and made a segmented bowl. Been messing around with our first lathe for about a week now.

I used white pine for the rings, regular pine for the bottom, and boild linseed oil for the finish.

A lot of fun.

Nice! It’s too late to turn back now! Welcome to the slippery slope of lathe work :^)

My suggestion, just do it. This was really fun. I love learning new things and then using those things in other ways. I can honestly say that the part of this I thought would be difficult was the easiest (shaping the inside) and the part that is usually easy (initial cuts, glue ups, etc) is the most critical.

I would normally think you were kidding, but it’s only my second project and I’m already HOOKED! LOL! It’s seriously addictive. Last week my son and I were like, “Hmmm. Lathe or planer?” This week I realize how many attachments I need for the lathe that I don’t have! LOL!

Nice job. Pine isn’t the easiest to turn. It seems to like to splinter and tearout on the endgrain can be a problem. Though, in this case, you’ve eliminated most of the end grain by segmenting. Still it can be challenging and you did a great job with it.

Love all the addiction talk, because it is. My daughter was watching Harry Potter tonight and asked me for a wand. To the lathe!

Have your say...
