These are some turnings I did for a “Craft Crawl” (think of a cross between a craft show and a scavenger hunt). The bowl is ash. The candle sticks are Honduran mahogany. The “cigar” pens are tigerwood, maple, paudauk, and acrylic. There were to be ten “cigar” pens, but three wood ones came apart on the lathe, due to unseen flaws in the blanks. One acrylic didn’t pass muster (read- looked like crap). And one of the hardwood pens was assembled incorrectly due to bone-headed inattentiveness.
The “slimline” pens are a variety of hardwoods, including tigerwood, lacewood, paydauk, maple, bubinga, and wenge.

Pens look great, I have not done any pens yet, have everything to do them, except courage…. I like the yellow acrylic. Thanks for being honest, I wonder sometimes if I am the only one that messes up stuff! I was over in the Honduras and saw those mahogany trees, they are something, and saw a great wood called Prima Vera (spelling). A great wood also. Keep up the good work.

Very nice work, Gord! I’ve done many wooden pens, but have given them all away! I don’t have one for myself. I did my first acrylic pen last Christmas, and it was a unique turning experience! Crazy shavings, eh?

well done.
I’m curious as to how the craftcrawl works. .. a scavenger hunt?

Hi Debbie.
Basically, a Craft Crawl is a group of crafters who club together and organize themselves (set dates, print lists, create websites, etc). Each crafter sets up a display of their wares in their livingroom, basement, or workshop. On the day of the crawl, the customers, who have compiled a list of crafters (complete with addresses and crafts offered) make there way from place to place, according to the craft they are seeking out. The Crawl takes place within a very local area (in this case the crafters are all within 7 km of each other). I admit to piggy-backing on one crafter; my wife’s friend has offered me space at her place for my work. In return I contribute a portion of my sales to the charity of her choice. Talk about a win-win!!
