It’s hard to see where the hours (and there were many, many of them) went in the design of this – the wife described it as “a picture frame with handles” – she’s off my christmas card list again!
Still – no matter – it’s finished, and it isn’t too unlike what was in my head.
Some firsts in here…
Still – no matter – it’s finished, and it isn’t too unlike what was in my head.
Some firsts in here…
- Genuine, pukka, proper joints – I’m not sure what you call them, but they didn’t go too badly – fairly tight, fairly flush – one day I must get a router table
- Dealing with dyed wood – so you can’t “sand flush”, you can’t wipe off excess glue with a damp rag, and you have to be very careful oiling it
The bent laminated handle isn’t quite the shape I envisaged, nor is it quite wide enough, but I’d broken 6 pieces of wood trying to get the right shape, and, I confess, I gave up trying for what was on my sketch.
Strained beech and plywood, Danish oil finish.
Comments, thoughts, criticism etc – all are welcome.

Very interesting design.
I like the contrast and especially the handles.
I also like the corners.

Beautiful!
I really like the way you designed the “handles” to fit into the tray.

A very colorfull tray with a unique handle. Are the handles fixed only by glue or you have used screws? Nice photos.

“Are the handles fixed only by glue or you have used screws”
They were manhandled into the slots with elbow-grease and clamps, both because of tightness, and because it’s a slight bend more than they are in their natural state. Just to be sure I added some glue, though I don’t think I needed it.

Gorgeous!
Love the design and the details…the way you slotted the handles in there is both ingenious and beautiful.
Who wouldn’t love to see that every morning?
