Surprise 40th birthday party for good friends of ours, who enjoy a good bourbon or wine. Nothing extravagant here, just a few rustic looking containers to round out their gifts.
The bourbon box is Steve Ramsey’s design, with a printed logo of the distillery who makes the bourbon we got him. Rowan’s Creek from Willett – delicious stuff.
The wine box is old pine scraps I had lying around. I duplicated a design I found on the interwebs – threw in a few dowels to hold the handle for a nice little accent. A printed logo on the sides, but it didn’t come through nearly as dark.
Both finished with “homemade stain”—steel wool, vinegar, and coffee grounds that sat for some time—then roughed up/re-sanded to give it the worn rustic look. A few coats of spray lacquer to finish them off.
Quick, fun, easy builds. Best thing about the rustic look is that mistakes and blemishes are just more character.
