At the Hand Tool Demo while at the SoCal WoodWorking Show yesterday, the rep was using padded sanding blocks. This is one of those things that I always think about AFTER I needed them and had always PLANNED on making them but just never got around to it.
So went to the Craft Store today and picked up a roll of cork. Then planed down a piece of cupped Douglas Fir I had laying around, after a few minutes with my trusty #5, then #7 and finally #4, I had a flat piece of wood. I cut it to size on the TS and plowed a groove thru the middle to fit the left over piece of pine I used for the spline. I also planed chamfers on all four edges of the blocks. The cork is used for drawer liner so it came with glue on one side and worked perfectly.
I have 3 extra which will be going to my woodworking buddy for helping with my new bandsaw delivery, that is, once I tell him he is helping me ;o)

It’s the simple things, really, that make a nice difference and these should come in handy. I see from the third picture that you alternated the growth rings, probably to avoid the wood cupping again? :D Did you make it to Rockler’s tool swap meet? I picked up a #4c type 11 and a #90. I spent a little time tuning up the #4 and holy smokes it makes a pretty nice smoother. I’ve never had a bench plane leave such a fine finish before.
