The LOML decided she wanted a new swing for her yard. We looked all over and found nothing worth buying. I decided to build one for her I had a lot of nice Walnut and decide on Birdseye maple for the slats. The local WC store had noting but junk so I called Steve at Wall lumber and told him what i needed. He put together one of his 20 bdft UPS bundles with all pieces being 61-62” in length. This allowed me to rip the slats and trim to the 60” needed for the swing. I used half lap joints and stainless hardware. The finish is Spar varnish. Hope you like it, she sure does. Dan

Wow, Walnut and Birdseye Maple, That’s fancy! Made a great looking swing. I used to go to Steve Wall Lumber when I lived in the Raleigh Area. Great guy to deal with. I get most of my hardwoods from the Hardwood Store in Gibsonville, NC. now. Hill (the owner) used to work for Steve Wall before he opened his own place and I got to know him when I would go to Steve’s. The Hardwood Store is another great place to get lumber from. Whenever I go up there, they let me hand select all my lumber, so I’m like a kid in a candy store!

Dan, this is a gorgeous swing. Much too nice to be outside in the weather but it would be hard to bring it indoors, I am sure. :) You chose a nice wood combination and the heart onlay is a nice romantic gesture on your part.
By the way are you sure her search for a commercially available swing wasn’t a ploy just to get you moving on building one yourself? My wife does that to me all the time. They seem to be fast learners when to comes to figuring out which “buttons” to push to get us motivated.
Nice job.

Dan, thanks for the extra pictures. I can see the carving in the second one. Nice job on the carving. As a non-carver I enjoy seeing this talent expressed by those to whom it has been gifted.
